Verizon Heritage will be a tight affair

April 17, 2008toApril 21, 2008

The Verizon Heritage begins this week with a pretty strong field in attendance. Although only seven of the top 20 in the FedEx Rankings will play this week, the field also contains Chris DiMarco, Jim Furyk, Zach Johnson, Tom Lehman, Justin Leonard, Davis Love III, Jesper Parnivek David Toms, and the 2007 winner Boo Weekley.

The Verizon Heritage has produced first-time winners on the PGA Tour the last three years. They include Peter Lonard in 2005, Aaron Baddeley in 2006 and Weekley last year. What made Weekley’s victory even more exciting was chipping in on the last two holes of the tournament to beat Els by a one stroke.

This week, nearly a quarter of the field will be coming from Georgia at Augusta National Golf Club. The players will try to relax from a week of pressure at a major championship, they’ll have to switch their games to a much smaller course.Harbour Town is a only 6,913 yards long compared to Augusta National’s 7,445 yards. The course, designed by Pete Dye and Jack Nicklaus, is known for its tight fairways, which are lined by tall pines, waste areas, and water hazards. This layout leaves a very small playing area and undersized greens.

This will be an extremely tough test for the players, since Harbour Town, one of the shortest courses on the PGA Tour, remains tricky course to score well on. The course ranked the 19th most difficult last year. So, this Hilton Head golf course will probably provide a stiff test and not allow a run-away.
